80stees.com will be giving away FREE Tshirt to one lucky Geek Shirts HQ follower through a special contest, more details at the end of the interview.
In the eighties I was sporting a mullet, wearing a Frankie Says Relax T shirt and trying very hard to get to first base with the ladies.
Kevin on the other hand was dreaming of starting his own clothing business based on the eighties, his favorite decade!
So he jumped into his Delorean when back to the future and found out the future trends that will one day make his fortune
Fast forward to 2012 and Kevin is known as the new Hugh Hefner, he has been called a playboy and a guru of eighties fashion.
This is the story of a clothing brand called 80stees.com.
Kevin, can you stop playing with your flux capacitor we have an interview to finish!
Who are the people behind 80sTees? Can you start by giving some background about yourself? Where you are from? Who creates the designs? How did you get into shirt design?
I started the company in December 1999. I ran the business part time first out of my parent’s house and then out of my own house until 2002. My degree is in Geo-Environmental Engineering and I had a couple different jobs before quitting to run 80sTees full time.
I am from a suburb of Pittsburgh, PA and have lived within a few miles of my current house all of my life.
We sell officially licensed merch so our designs come from companies that have licenses, or in some cases we have our own licenses and design the tees ourselves. We are very involved in coming up with concepts for designs even when we don’t have a license, though.
I got into shirt retail more than design at first, although it has evolved into both. I started the company after finding and wearing a He-Man t-shirt to a theme park called Kennywood in 1999. A lot of people asked me where I got it and complimented me on it so I realized there was an opportunity to sell these on the web.
"This Hoverboard Back To The Future shirt advertises the futuristic transportation device as seen in Back To The Future 2."
Where did you get the name 80sTees?
The t-shirts I wanted to sell were from my childhood, and I grew up in the 80s. So I created the term 80sTees.
Can you tell me more about the brand 80sTees?
Our goal is to create a place where people can have fun and celebrate nostalgia. We see our shirts as community builders. The clothes you wear help you connect with others people just like you.
"This Panthor and Skeletor Shirt features He-Man's nemesis along with his evil feline companion. Skeletor is holding his Havoc Staff while he sits on the throne of Snake Mountain."
What makes 80sTees different from other Apparel Vendors? What is your USP?
80sTees.com exists to help people connect with other members of their pop culture tribe.
We aren’t out just to sell t-shirts. We could have made a lot of sales of some items that don’t have a pop culture theme over the years like Orange County Choppers, the UFC style Jersey Shore tees, or political tees. But those tees don’t fit our mission and we stick to our mission.
What’s coming next for 80sTees?
More exclusive t-shirts, sweatshirts, and costumes that people will want to share and talk about.
"Now you can burn people without opening your mouth BAZINGA! with this Big Bang Theory shirt based on the catch phrase created by Sheldon Cooper."
Where do you see yourself in 10 years both for yourselves and your business?
I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you.
When getting your apparel printed what is the process that you prefer?
We do a bit of everything. It really depends on the artwork and how many we want to carry in stock. Silk screening is the go to method, but we have used DTG and heat transfers as well.
"This Darth Vader shirt features Vader resting his boom box on his shoulder."
What brands of apparel do you prefer to print on?
We like Next Level, Gildan, and Alstyle. They provide good value and let us keep our prices reasonable.
What would a customer expect when ordering a product from yourselves?
They should expect to get the t-shirt they ordered in perfect condition, and they should expect it to ship from our warehouse very fast.
Where is the best place to find your designs and buy some of your shirts? And of course get in contact with you
The only place to buy is www.80stees.com. You can follow us on twitter @80stees or facebook.com/80sTees or even subscribe to our Pinterest feeds

"Here at the office we don't get into political debates about whether to vote with the Democrats or the Republicans. They are jostling for second place on our ballots. This year we are voting Pizza Party with the Ninja Turtles. The best thing about this political shirt is that no matter what happens in the future you won't be embarrassed to wear this one!"
