Welcome to the latest edition of the Geek Shirts HQ T Shirt Brand Undressed Interview.
This week’s special guest is a brand that I have been following for a while, started by two brothers.Cashletes have carved out a unique identity for themselves in over populated on line t shirt world, combining finance with sports.
Geek Shirts HQ welcomes Cashletes
……the latest brand to get undressed.
Who are the people behind Cashletes? Can you start by giving some background about yourself? Where you are from? How did you get into selling t shirts?
The founders of Cashletes are siblings AJ (me) and Moust Camara, and we’re based in New Jersey.
We grew up on comic books and video games, and now we do some heavy duty coding and write books, so feel free to call us geeks!
We’re lifelong artists and we’ve operated half a dozen artistic ventures over the past few years, and it lead us to starting a clothing brand, which is a great artistic outlet.
Prior to starting Cashletes we had multiple stints of starting different t-shirt projects and were generally just immersed in the t-shirt culture.
Who creates the designs?
I create all the designs from conception to completion, while Moust helps develop some ideas.
What process do you follow when designing a shirt?
It varies based on how the idea for the design comes to me. I generally start out with some form of inspiration for the design, which could be anything from a vintage Raiders sweatshirt to a symbol on a dollar bill, or even some interesting poster I come across. Then I sketch out a few different concepts or go straight into Photoshop and start playing around with different elements.
After I get a pretty good rough draft of the design I leave it alone for a few days, then come back to it later with fresh eyes. I then make any adjustments I see necessary, tighten up the details, make a mockup to see what the end result might look like and then prepare it for print.
How would you describe your design style?
When it comes to Cashletes I’d say bold, clean, simple, illustrative. My background is in cartoons and comic books, so a little bit of that might shine through sometimes.
Where did you get the name Cashletes?
We were doing a different clothing brand before Cashletes and one of the designs that never made it to production was called “Worldwide Paper Chasers” and it was an athletic inspired thing.
While coming up with that idea I thought of some different sporty money themed ideas and had a list of like 20 possible money teams and thought “Man we need a name for all this!”.
Didn’t take much thinking, I came up with the word “Cashletes” in a matter of seconds.
It’s a combination of “cash” and “athletes”.
Can you tell me more the brand Cashletes?
The Cashletes brand represents the relentless pursuit of financial victory.
Inspired by the practice and glory of competitive sport and the American dream of well earned financial success.
Our product line reflects classic sportswear and merchandise, but with an added twist of money mindedness.
What makes Cashletes different from other Apparel Vendors? What is your USP?
Cashletes combines money-minded themes with athletic aesthetics, giving you sports apparel that represents what we're all competing for.
What’s coming next for Cashletes?
We plan on adding continually improving our product line while opening retail accounts worldwide so we’re more easily accessible to more of our customers, and ultimately building our own flagship stores in the near future.
Money Is The Root Of All Evil T Shirt
Where do you see yourself in 10 years both for yourselves and your business?
Let’s see, in 10 years I’d be 34 so I’d probably have achieved most of the goals I’ve set over the past few years, maybe even be featured on the Forbes list by then (fingers crossed!) and Cashletes would have several retail locations worldwide and be amongst the top 10 streetwear brands in the industry.
How much importance do you place on Facebook Twitter and similar sites when marketing your brand?
It’s great to be able to communicate with our customers and potential customers, as well as fellow brand owners, so we make sure we have a presence on every popular social networking site.
We also try to remain active as much as possible.
When getting your apparel printed what is the process that you prefer and why?
We screen print all of our t-shirts and sweatshirts.
Screen printing is the best method for the designs I make, since it gives a bold, crisp, finished print quality that lasts.
What brands of apparel do you prefer to print on?
When we’re not making a custom cut-and-sew product we print on Alstyle and Independent Trading Co.
What would a customer expect when ordering a product from you?
Not only will they get a quality product that looks good and feels great, but they’re also getting a product that represents and reaffirms what they’re competing for.
Anyone you want to give a shout out to?
Yeah, shout outs to all of our customers, our new team members Javier and Lovelisa, our mom and dad for backing our crazy business ideas all the way
Our other siblings over at BrandxHype.com and RISD, and everyone out there starting a brand of their own.
Who are your favourite designers and/or brands?
My favorite brands are 10 Deep, UNDFTD, Homage, ONLY NY, The Hundreds, Hall Of Fame, and everybody on Karmaloop Kazbah making it happen.
Who are your influences?
Everyone mentioned above, as well as whoever designed 80’s-90’s era sports merchandise and team logos.
I thought I would finish off with one of my personal favourites from their collection, yes I know it is not a t shirt but I think it looks pretty damn cool!
Is there anything else you want to add? Where is the best place to find your designs and buy some of your shirts? And of course get in contact with you? Twitter id, Facebook page, anywhere else?
