I came across, this cool t shirt designer when I found a cool Star Wars designs on a site dedicated to geek apparel for women. The site is www.heruniverse.com and really is a cool site with some awesome designs but there was one design that really stood out and wanted to feature here at Geek Shirts HQ.
I really did not know a lot of about the designer Vasquez. I didn’t know she also had a redbubble store so I was eager to feature some of her new designs as well. Denise is very passionate about the things that interest her and is proud to be a geek.
So it is a pleasure topresent to you Denise Vasquez and get her to tell you more about her new designs.
Denise over to you to take centre stage!
"Empowerment Mega Fan Girl Shirt" by Denise Vasquez & Randy Martinez
Life is my canvas, experience is my palette, my heart, soul, and imagination are my tools! Whenever I create, (whether it’s art, music, or poetry) my vision is always inspired by something I’m connected to & feel strongly about.
My latest design the “Empowerment: Mega Fangirl”is a portrayal of my passion to inspire & empower others to be who they are and to be proud of it! I am an activist & Founder of WO+MEN 4 A CAUSE, an artist, and a geek! I’m 43 years young, been a geek my entire life & proud of it. I didn’t feel the need to announce it, or prove it, I just was, that is until recently!
Some people seem to feel the need to bully geeks, isolate geeks, make fun of geeks, and shun geeks… I know because I’ve seen it and I’ve dealt with it first hand, my entire life.
I love to read books and comics…I love playing board games…I love video games & going to barcades…I love science…I love dressing up in costumes…I love Star Wars, Firefly & Serenity, Wonder Woman, Batman, Transformers, Star Trek, Avengers and all things Marvel, Harry Potter, Lord Of The Rings, Doctor Who,And I love to create!
As an artist, that’s what I do, I create because I can and it is a part of my being! I’m tired of hearing in a condescending way: “You're such a Geek…You do everything, You’re too good” like it's a bad thing!
I can recall hearing those same words in Elementary school when I won the book reading contest, in Junior high school when I played the violin, and in High School when I got the MVP award for Track & Field & won the Science & Ethics award on Graduation day. The sad truth is, I still hear it & deal with bullies even as an adult today!
I hope that doing & being good will inspire & uplift others to join me & do the same, not cause them to isolate me for being who I am! I never had a desire to be anything other than myself or try to Fit In, and I refuse to hold myself back from accomplishing everything I want to achieve in this life!
Working hard, Living my dreams & being Geeky makes me happy, nothing & no one will ever change that!
I will always be my unique self! Back in July I wrote an article for the Examiner titled “I’m A Geek And I’m Proud” because I noticed that there is a lot of negativity surrounding Geeks. Instead of feeding into any of it, I decided to use my skills & creativity in a positive light! I envisioned myself as a super Heroine empowering others to be who they are & proud of it!
My love for comics & cartoons led me to approaching my boyfriend Randy Martinez (www.randymartinez.net ), who is an incredible artist. I knew that he had the perfect style for my concept, he had the skills to bring her to life, he himself is a geek and he could relate to my vision! Randy & I talked about all of the Geeky things we love & incorporated those things into this design!
Truly a magical collaboration! Our design “Empowerment: Mega Fangirl” pays Tribute to all Geeks, Mega Fangirls & Boys in hopes to Empower them to be who they are! Wear it with pride! You can Order your shirt or sticker here
Empowerment: Mega Fangirl T-Shirt by Denise Vasquez
Another T-shirt design I created that exemplifies Geek Pride & being proud of who you are, is my Spanish Vader T-shirt. Ashley Eckstein Founder of "Her Universe" hired me to create a design for them. She wanted to do a Spanish T-shirt & me being a proud Latin Woman, and a Star Wars artist, I was in heaven!
It was truly an honor to work on such a unique project that brought together all of the things that I love most: Creating, Star Wars, my Spanish Culture, and creating a design that all Geek Girls could wear with pride!
I loved working with Ashley on this design! She is a wonderful art director, communicator, visionary, and such a passionate Woman who inspires me in every way! Our conversations were always uplifting & exciting!
We discussed ideas & it was obvious that we were on the same page in wanting to do something purposeful that had never been done before on a T-shirt! We talked about my Spanish Culture, “Day of the Dead”, “Sugar Skull” themes, Star Wars quotes and translations in Spanish.
I was so excited when we decided on the Vader quote! Once I incorporated the quote into the art, it brought a new meaning to the shirt & to anyone who wears it!
I like to call my recipe for this design my “Tribe Vibe” flavour! It has Star Wars, Darth Vader, Spanish, Native American, Taino Indian, Mexican Culture, Sugar Skull, Day of the Dead, Geek Girl Power, with a touch of “The Force”!
My grandfather always encouraged me to be proud of who I am, my culture, and would tell me time and time again to find ways to incorporate all that I am into my art! This T-shirt is my Tribute to my grandfather & everyone who wears it with Pride! “La Fuerza Es Fuerte Con Este” The Force is strong with This one!
