I'm an illustrator and cartoonist from Nottingham, UK. My background is in film and video production, working with numerous companies and on a number of projects, but as my love for video production dwindled, my love for illustration grew. Although I HATE the word (as I've had massive amounts of help and tuition from friends and artists on twitter/Facebook etc. etc.) I'm a self-taught artist, or at least have no formal training.
My wife one day suggested producing small illustrations for kids one day (for our first born to begin with) and my love for drawing has just exploded since then.
Where did you get your inspiration for the site monkey and the mouse?
It is simply from my kids. It's purely about them and the fun things they say and do. A good friend, Drew Pocza produces a web comic called Pokeweed and I took a lot of inspiration from him.
Where did you get the name Monkey and mouse?
It's simply the name we call our kids.
Where do you get your inspiration for your designs?
My tee designs are purely about what I'd want to wear. Big Star Wars fan and so a lot comes from there, but it's basically just what would I love to wear.
When you create a new t shirt design, what is sort of process do you follow?
A lot of my designs tend to start with a word or phrase, in the case of my Band of Brothers tee, it was a case of, I love the TV show and the title opens itself up to a huge amount of possibilities.
Technically, it's purely sketch it all out either in a sketchpad or in Manga Studio. From there I'll ink it and colour it and then add any textures/text in Photoshop.
Looking at your own portfolio what is your favourite design and why?
I have 2 favourites at the minute (probably because they are the latest ones), Anger Management – a Tintin inspired piece, and Only Imperial Stormtroopers… – Think that one goes without saying.
Here are some in progress shots of my Only Imperial Stormtroopers tee with the finished design at the end
What current projects are you working on now? And can we get an exclusive peek?
I'm working on a piece that involves worms… I am just trying to figure out the colour combinations.
Something I am working on at the moment
Who are your favourite designers?
Not sure I have "favourite" designers, but I do love a LOT of the stuff that goes up on shirtpunch.com
Have bought a shirt by Josh Alves/Drew Pocza, and I love the stuff by Alan Myers. Also like tees by Michael Myers AKA Drawsgood
Do you try to convey any message in your designs?
Fun, pure and simple.
Star Wars or Star Trek? Which do you prefer?
If you don't know that one yet…
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Basking in luxury with all the tee sales I've made…or just producing more of the same. Would love to get more of my stuff on the bigger, and better know sites such as ShirtPunch, Tee Fury and maybe even Threadless.
What other interests and hobbies do you have when you’re not designing?
Family, Friends and Films – the 3 Fs
Anyone you want to give a shout out to?
