Interview With Designer Steve O’ Blenis Better Known as Warbucks

There so many designers, who have created some great designs, I will be highlighting their work the shirts that have brought them to our attention and hopefully give the designers some well-earned time in the spotlight.

This week we are focusing on a designer who calls himself Warbucks.  I came across Warbuck’s designs while searching for new tees to feature on Geek Shirts HQ I was looking for Avengers Tees and found his Earths Mightiest Hero shirt.

Obviously this shirt is inspired by The Avengers, I really like this shirt, and I think it is sometimes difficult to create something original from a subject so well known, but I think Warbucks has achieved it with this design.

Anyway this prompted me to get in touch with Steve as when I checked out his portfolio, I loved his designs. I think you will enjoy his designs as well.

Check out my interview with Steve below:

Can you start by giving some background about yourself?

I'm from Plainville, MA (US) and I've been a graphic designer for about 15 years but I just started designing T-shirts last June of 2011. A friend of mine turned me onto it through a few sites and now it's become a hobby for me. It's something I'll do when I get home and allows me to be creative in a fun way.

I've always been a geek. Love superheroes, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and video games. Pretty much everything that runs under the geek category.

Where do you get your inspiration for your designs?

My inspiration really comes from my love of movies or television, or anything thing I might see during that day that could pop a new idea into my head. My designs range from simple to detailed but each one is something that I like personally and I always hope others with like them as well.

In my opinion, designing shirts can be approached in two ways. You design something that you think will sell or you design something that you enjoy yourself. Obviously, you attempt to go for the happy medium of both but that becomes really difficult sometimes.

So always remember to do something you have a love for because whether others like it or not, at least you have a piece you're happy with in the end

What are you working on next?

As for what to look for from me next? You never know. It really depends on my mood and the day. Lots of ideas fly through my head but never make it to a shirt but suddenly something will pop into my mind and I throw something together.

I always love getting feedback on my work and also seeing what others create. There are so many talented artists out there! It's easy to get lost in the shuffle.

What is your preference, wearable art or printed art?

Definitely printed art. I'm pretty clean cut but I love t-shirts. All kinds… retro, geeky, sci-fi, movies, television, sleeveless (need to show off the guns), you name it, I'd wear it. But especially my own! Wait, isn't there a rule like being in a band… if you're in the band you shouldn't wear your own shirt?

Do you try to convey any message in your designs?

No messages, just my love for the subject matter. Whenever someone wears one of my designs I always hope that it'll be a conversation piece. Where did you get that shirt? Oh, you like Star Wars? Stuff like that.

It doesn't always have to be a highly detail shirt, it can be simple too. Basically if it gets you to turn your head then I succeeded.

One of the best experiences for me was seeing some people actually wearing my Wizneyland design at Universal Studios in Orland, FL for the Harry Potter movie opening. To me, that was amazing.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Ha. I should have my wife answer this one for me, I'm sure she has her answer. Seriously, I'll probably still be doing graphic design. I really do love it and if I'm lucky, still firing out some fun ideas for t-shirts. It's a hobby that I really enjoy and the positive feedback I get from some people really adds to the enjoyment.

There are some really nice people out there and when I can make something some else enjoys, it really is a great feeling.

Looking at your own portfolio what is your favourite design and why?

All of them! Honestly, if I had to pick one I would have to pick the one that started the whole t-shirt design thing for me… Wizneyland. That was one of my first shirts I designed.

One of the quickest concepts I came up with and luckily it was picked as shirt of the day on Qwertee. They were great to work with and I need to give them a shout out and thank them for getting me started on my adventure.

Where is the best place to find your designs and buy some of your shirts?

Well hopefully on one of the large shirt of the day shirts. I have a few up there but nothing planned for print right now. Hopefully soon.
