Today’s designer is married with kids, so nothing different there. However what makes this designer so different apart from his obvious skills to make some awesome tees is that he thinks he is from the planet Vulcan or the planet Tatooine.Obviously neither of these are true, that is just ridiculous. He is actually from the planet Krypton and yes I can exclusively reveal he is Superman!!
Today’s Designer Is Michael Swank, The Latest To Get Unlocked
When he is not fighting the bad guys or making bad movies in the eighties (Superman 3 and 4) he is an excellent designer, his influences are from geek fandom, however his style I can’t pin down as it can change to suit the subject matter at hand.Michael, can you stop trying to put your underwear over the outside of your trousers, it is not time for Superman but time for your interview!!
Can you start by giving some background about yourself? Where you are from? What is your background? How did you get into design?
I'm 34 years old married with 3 children and love Sci-fi, Comics, Video Games, and Sports. Does that make me a Nerd? I originally am from the desert valley of Vulcan or for Star War fans Tatooine ok really Phoenix, AZ but it’s all the same.
Now I reside in the Great Pacific Northwest of Seattle or is that Ferenginar or Dagobah like I said all the same. I have a background in the IT field I currently work for Major League Baseball.
I always loved to buy T-shirts an obsession of mine my wife hates and always wanted to design my own so I started making the ones I would like to wear.
Where did you get the name AWEswanky from?
Originally was a project with a friend now it’s morphed into AWESome Swankiness.
Where do you get your inspiration for your designs?
In the deep dark recesses of my mind that holds my nerd side, a lot like the dark side but nerdier. Sci-fi, comics, and video games mostly.
When you create a new t shirt design, what is sort of process do you follow?
I always got ideas popping in my head daily I keep them in my notes on my iPhone as they come to me. Sometimes I just start off by drawing a rough sketch of it. I have been using Gimpshop to create my designs these days a powerful software tool for design and best of all it is free.
Looking at your own portfolio what is your favourite design and why?
The one I am most proud of is my "Enterprise Seven" since that one became the first to become officially licensed by Star Trek.
Originally was done as Roddenberry's Seven but had to be changed to "Enterprise Seven" due to licensing issues using the Roddenberry name.

A couple droids who are BFF's. Some popular cars from the TV and Movie world. Also have some ideas for old school games in the works.
Who are your favourite designers?
I really enjoy the artwork and designs of Steve Thomas. My top 3 favourite artists are Greg Horn, Mike Mayhew, and Alex Ross.
Do you try to convey any message in your designs?
I am a Geek. I wish it was deeper than that.
Star Wars or Star Trek? Which do you prefer?
Star Wars makes for great movies but Star Trek is my favourite, it has so much more to offer and touches on human morality. Deep space 9 is my all-time favourite series.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Living in a Paradise would be nice but before that it would be nice to turn my hobby into more of a career.
What do you prefer designing for, something wearable or a print?
Wearable for sure
What other interests and hobbies do you have when you’re not designing?
I watch a lot of sports, just got done winning my fantasy football league woo hoo! I also like to play basketball and play the PS3 and my PS Vita.
Do you have any advice for budding designers?
I'm open to advice myself since I'm pretty new at this, but I can say never give up and just keep doing your dream.
Anyone you want to give a shout out to?
My wife Charity, my son Vaughn, my daughters Jasmine and Ezri (yes named after Dax from DS9), my lifelong best friend from childhood Mario Lopez, and my Trekkie buddy Marty (McFly) Vaccaro.
Where is the best place to find your designs and buy some of your shirts? And of course get in contact with you
ANY OTHER WEBSITE THAT FEATURES YOUR DESIGN
One last question, when you going to design a Back To The Future shirt as I am a massive fan? 🙂
If I had a flux capacitor I would have used it to go back in time and create a BTTF shirt before this interview but since I don't it will be coming in the Future.
Thank you for a great interview, and don't forget flux capacitor, as what use is a time machine without one! 🙂
