This week we have a new brand, coming straight out of California, RTW shirts really do look like they want to rule the world.
RTW shirts is a design competition looking to give designers an opportunity to gain more exposure in China, along with their design competition, there is also the traditional online t shirt store that they run that has some awesome designs.
RTW is looking to really give the independent designer a great way to expand their profile. I really like the way that RTW are trying to do this and so it is a pleasure to welcome RTW Shirts, the latest brand to get undressed.
There is also a cool contest that you can look out for at the end of the interview to win one of their cool tees.
Who are the people behind RTW Shirts? Can you start by giving some background about yourself? Where you are from? Who creates the designs? How did you get into shirt design?
There are a couple different people behind RTW Shirts. We have a programmer, Jens, and Alex and Raymond who take care of a lot of the day to day. The three of us are from the San Francisco Bay Area in California.
We also have a designer, Johnny, who recently moved to New York, who did a fantastic job on branding and created our pig! Overseas, in our Beijing office, Sissi takes care of everything (including help on translations!).
On RTW Shirts, our designs are created by users and voted on. We also work with a lot of different brands for RTW Trading Co. RTW Trading Co. is a much more traditional t-shirt brand and the first few designs were created by Johnny. However, we’re collaborating with different people and brands for our next few designs.
This is a cool in house design from RTW Shirts.
Where did you get the name RTW?
RTW stands for Rule the World. It’s kind of an open invitation to any artist or designer, or anyone really. What could be better than Ruling the World?
Can you tell me more about the brand RTW Shirts?
RTW Shirts is a t-shirt design competition based in China. We are looking to help artists and designers outside of China to gain more exposure and open up a new market for them.
For artists and designers in China, they don’t really have these types of outlets to showcase their work, so we want to help them get more recognition. It’s a win-win for everyone.
We are also working with some retail brands, so the designs can end up on store shelves. I think it’d be pretty cool as an artist to see your stuff in retail stores around the world!
Here is the first of RTW winning designs from Mimi
And what about RTW Trading Co.?
RTW Trading Co. gets its name from the trading companies of the past! They would travel the world and bring back exotic goods like spices and tea. Our aim is to help small indie brands from around the world get into a new market: China and Asia.
We’ve currently teamed up with about 10 brands and we’re in talks with a few more. We want to create kind of an indie superstore (is that an oxymoron?). We also have a couple of talented designers who work for us, so we use created some designs under the RTW flag.
Another cool in house design.
What’s coming next for RTW?
Well, we’ve already mentioned this, but for RTW Shirts, we’re working with some retail stores, so the shirts may start popping up in a store near you. Also, we’re currently in talks with a couple of people about doing some shirts for charity. We’re always trying to give back, and we think that this would be a great way to get everyone involved.
For RTW Trading Co., we’re looking to expand our own line. We’d like to do some collaboration with different brands. We’re also looking at some accessories and cut and sew options.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years both for yourselves and your business?
We hope to be ruling the world.
When getting your apparel printed what is the process that you prefer?
We use silk screen printing on all our shirts. We produce all our shirts in China, since we are based there.
Another cool in house design.
What brands of apparel do you prefer to print on?
We actually use our own brand. We work closely with the factory (and we have someone in China who keeps up the quality) so that we have a t-shirt that is our own. We think this is important, because we have more say over the quality and cut of the shirt. Things can get a little weird when we are jumping back and forth from inches and centimetres, though. I guess you can say we print on RTW brand shirts!
What would a customer expect when ordering a product from you?
When you order from us, you can expect the utmost quality. That’s something that’s very important to us. We don’t want to sell t-shirts that are too stiff or don’t fit right. A t-shirt should be an expression of you, and how can it be when it doesn’t fit right or isn’t comfortable?
The second of RTW shirts winning designs, this design is from Abomb
Anyone you want to give a shout out to?
We’d like to give a shout to our designer Johnny Chang, with his artistic vision, he made our poorly drawn doodles into a reality.
Also, our moms, without their hard work and support we wouldn’t be here today! Thanks MOM!
Is there anything else you want to add?
Have you come and submitted and voted on designs yet?
Where is the best place to find your designs and buy some of your shirts? And of course get in contact with you.
If you’re in the U.S. or North America, we have a Big Cartel store already open.
The third of the winning designs from RTW shirts, this design is from Donnie. This is my personal favorite design available from RTW shirts.
Abroad, we’re launching a store for Asia on October 7th! You can also always contact us if we don’t have what you’re looking for. Shoot an email to firstname.lastname@example.org!
